Basilar artery occlusion caused by thrombosis of atherosclerotic fusiform aneurysm of the basilar artery.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Basilar artery occlusion caused by thrombosis of atherosclerotic fusiform aneurysm of the basilar artery is rare. We present a case confirmed by 6 years of follow-up and autopsy. CASE DESCRIPTION A 63-year-old man suffered from brain stem infarction. Computed tomography and angiography showed a fusiform aneurysm on the proximal portion of the basilar artery. At the time of the third attack 5 years later, complete thrombosis of the aneurysm was found, and the proximal basilar artery was occluded. On autopsy, an atherosclerotic aneurysm 15 mm in diameter was found. CONCLUSIONS A large atherosclerotic fusiform aneurysm of the basilar artery often causes brain stem infarction and involves a risk of complete thrombosis of the aneurysm and subsequent parent artery occlusion.

Endovascular treatment of a giant fusiform aneurysm of the entire basilar artery.
The authors describe a case of fusiform basilar artery aneurysm not amenable to surgical clipping or balloon occlusion with preservation of the parent artery. The aneurysm was treated by balloon occlusion (proximal basilar artery) after test occlusion was well-tolerated; 7-year follow-up showed good results.
متن کاملSpontaneous Occlusion of a Large Fusiform Basilar Artery Dissecting Aneurysm in a Child Complicated with Brainstem Infarction: a case report
Basilar artery dissecting aneurysms, although very rare in children, may be associated with severe morbidity and mortality. The management of these vascular lesions depends on clinical presentation of patients. Large fusiform vertebro-basilar dissecting aneurysms are exceedingly rare and can exert mass effect on the brainstem and cerebellum. We herein report the neuroimaging findings, including...
متن کاملTreatment of a Sequential Giant Fusiform Aneurysm of the Basilar Trunk
We report an exceptional case of a de novo giant fusiform aneurysm of the basilar trunk, which developed shortly after the therapeutic occlusion of the right internal carotid artery for a fusiform carotid aneurysm. It would appear to be appropriate to call this entity a sequential giant fusiform aneurysm. The patient was successfully treated with endovascular occlusion of the giant basilar trun...
متن کاملBasilar trunk occlusion during endovascular treatment of giant and fusiform aneurysms of the basilar artery.
Giant and fusiform aneurysms of the basilar artery (BA) are difficult to manage surgically, and they still present a challenge for the neurosurgeon despite progress in posterior fossa surgery. Guglielmi detachable coils have provided an alternative approach to treatment, but they have their own difficulties. We present a series of three patients with BA aneurysms treated with endovascular occlu...
متن کاملCase Report: Thrombosis of a ruptured fusiform basilar apex aneurysm after stenting and selective coiling.
Introduction Large fusiform and dissecting type intracranial aneurysms represent a challenge to both endovascular as well as microsurgical treatment approaches. Those involving the upper basilar artery and basilar apex represent a particular challenge. In many cases these aneurysms are not amenable to intravascular coiling without occluding the parent vessel. Clip reconstructions of such aneury...
